Toy Culture in a Tourist City
Until September 21, visitors walking through various areas of Macao may encounter unfamiliar figures in familiar places. A new collaboration between the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) and the Chinese brand POP MART has introduced four characters to four historical districts of Macao, creating an open-air trail that connects heritage areas with elements of pop culture. Visitors can snap photos with each character, share them using #POPMARTMACAOCITYWALK, and collect special postcards or stamps spelling “M-A-C-A-O.” A character-themed lucky draw for shoppers using select digital wallets adds a playful shopping incentive.
Taipa – LABUBU in the Leisure Zone
On Rua do Pai Kok in Taipa’s leisure district, the mischievous LABUBU from the THE MONSTERS series brings its untamed charm to a family-friendly promenade. With nine teeth and a playful gaze, this installation blends seamlessly into an area alive with tourists and local strollers, serving as a vibrant visual pause within a busy setting.
Camões Square – CRYBABY Among the Trees
Just off Macao’s main shopping thoroughfares lies Camões Garden, famed for its shady groves and ties to poet Luís de Camões. Here, CRYBABY, the embodiment of vulnerability and depth of feeling, finds a tranquil home near the pavilion. Its gentle presence complements the garden’s peaceful vibe, inviting quiet reflection.
Calçada da Igreja de S. Lázaro – Baby Molly Between Tradition and Culture
In one of Macao’s heritage-rich lanes, flanked by Portuguese facades and art galleries, Baby Molly’s dreamy, independent spirit offers a modern counterpoint to the stern stone of the S. Lázaro church. Its soft hues and stylized form draw families and art lovers alike, enriching a street already known for cultural flair.
St. Augustine’s Square – DIMOO in the Historic Centre
Steps from the church and Dom Pedro V Theatre—both UNESCO landmarks—DIMOO floats into St. Augustine’s Square with quiet wonder. This introspective boy among clouds resonates with visitors drawn to the area’s storied past, providing a serene visual note in a space defined by heritage.
